API Monogram is a self-registering program designed to an organization involved in manufacturing the equipment’s and products used in the oil and gas industry which shall be controlled by API monogram licenses.

API Monogram licensing are generally certified when organization implement and maintains requirements of API Q1 and proves the capability of the organization to meet the production and testing requirements of Monogram.

What is API Monogram Mark ???
The API Monogram is an API registered certification mark. Through the API Monogram Program, licensed manufacturers are given the authority to apply the mark to equipment that meets API product specification requirements and has been manufactured within a quality management system that meets API Spec Q1.
API has established specific requirements for control and use of the mark. Licensees are required to document, implement and maintain Monogram Mark controls based on the requirements. The rights and authorities to use the mark are facility and location specific and can only be applied to new products in conjunction with the facility’s license number and the date of manufacture.
Use of the Monogram and license number on conforming product provides traceability back to the original manufacturer of the product and the original design and manufacturing specifications.

QMS Exclusions:
API Spec Q1, Ninth Edition allows few clauses of the standard that are applicable for exclusion as below.
Furthermore, such exclusions cannot affect the organization’s ability, or responsibility, to provide products and related servicing that meet customer and applicable regulatory requirements. Exclusions are limited to the following clauses
- 5.4, Design and Development;
- 5.7.1.2, Servicing;
- 5.7.1.5, Validation of Processes for Production and Servicing;
- 5.7.5, Customer-Supplied Property;
- 5.8, Control of Testing, Measuring, and Monitoring Equipment;
The organization shall be required to provide evidence that excluded the scope of services does not affect meeting the requirements of API specification or other applicable standards.
API Certification Process
- Organizations applying for licensing under the API Monogram Program must develop and maintain a quality manual that describes their quality management system and how it conforms to the requirements of API Spec Q1.
- Organizations participating in the API Monogram Program must also demonstrate continued ability to meet the technical requirements identified in the applicable API product specification(s).
- Companies applying for API Spec Q1 / API Q2 Registration must have quality manuals and quality management systems in conformance with API Spec Q1.
- Before submitting an application to API, organizations must have had a quality management system in place for at least four months. This includes performing and documenting an internal audit and management review by the applicable standard.
- Submit the completed application forms, application fee, and the quality manual (if applicable), and the API Spec Q1, 9th Edition Conformity Matrix and the API Spec Q2 Conformity Matrix. The quality manual must be written in English.
- API will review the application forms and the quality manual (if applicable). Should application forms be incomplete, and/or should the quality manual be out of conformance with requirements, API will provide comments?
- For those applying for an API Monogram License, once the application package, the quality manual and the API Spec Q1, Q2 Conformity Matrix are accepted, API will schedule an on-site audit. Audits include verifying the organization’s conformance.
- Those applying for certification to ISO 9001, API Spec Q1, API Spec Q2, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 may undergo a Stage 1 audit, Stage 1 audits are normally performed on-site and require organizations to provide the auditor with documents for review.
- Stage 2 audits are performed on-site and include verifying the organization’s conformance with API Spec Q1, API Spec Q2, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
- API will make the certification decision on the basis of an evaluation of the audit findings and conclusions, and evidence of effective implementation of corrective actions by the organization (if required).
Design Packages:
All applicant meeting the requirements of API advisory 6 should hold a Design Package(s) to demonstrate compliance with design and development requirements fluffing the requirements of API Spec Q1.

What is Design Package?
- Design – a detailed plan for a product(s).
- Package – a collection of data put together.
The design package shall include a detailed plan for a product(s) which includes all the background documents, applicable API standards, and the instructions, procedures, specifications, drawings, process sheets, and process validation documents.
The API Monogram design package shall include design plans, input elements, output elements, evidence of review/verification and evidence of validation and changes performed on the design if required as per API Spec Q1.
Monogram Program Requirements & Applications process:
To obtain API Monogram license, an organization must have a documented effectively functioning quality management system in place.
API Spec Q1 integrated with applicable API Product Specification listed by API Monogram Program.
What is the procedure for apply API Monogram Certification?
- Your organization should implement and maintain API Spec Q1 for at least four months
- A detailed internal audit covering compliance of all the clauses of API Q1 & Monogram
- Your organization should perform and document a management review
- Scope including the justification QMS exclusions if applicable
- Validated design package if your products are listed under API advisory 6
Application Submission
The applicant organization needs to satisfy the application requirements listed in Monogram Program Requirements, if any deficiencies is identified in the submitted application the issue to be resolved within one year of submission, failure to the same will withdraw the application.
- Initial audit not performed within one year from the date of API audit application shall lead to withdrawn of application.
- The initial audit shall only be set up when the application is accepted by API by the appointed API auditor.
Licensing Information
New Licenses:
Organization applying need to provide product details for each API Monogram License for which you are applying, as applicable to the API Specification(s). You can find product detail information for each Monogram License here. View List of API Monogram Licenses in API Product Specification Tab.
During the application a copy of Quality Manual to be uploaded in (in English), which thoroughly describes your QMS process. The Quality Manual must explicitly address all requirements identified in API Spec Q1, including the justification of executions.
Completed & approved copy conformity matrix to be uploaded as per API Spec Q1 9th Edition Conformity Matrix (in English).
